The best time to visit the Snow Monkey Park
December to March: the season people mean
Snow covers the valley for roughly four months of the year and can pile past a metre. The monkeys come down, the pool steams, and they sit in it with snow settling on their heads. December can start slow if the cold arrives late. March tails off as the days warm. In between you get the thing you came for.
January and February
These are the two months I would pick, and so does everyone else, which is the catch. The valley is coldest, the bathing is most reliable, and the trail is at its most difficult: packed snow, ice, and a final climb that catches people out. If you are coming in these weeks, read what to wear and take the crampons seriously. The park recommends buying simple ones in advance, and it is not being precious.
April and May
The snow goes, the pool empties of monkeys, and the infants arrive. Spring is the month I recommend to people who care more about watching a troop than about the postcard. Babies clinging to their mothers, adolescents pushing their luck, the whole social business of a hundred and sixty animals in daylight. The walk in is a normal forest path again rather than a test.
June, July and August
This is where the disappointment happens. Visitors arrive in August having seen one image, and find macaques sitting in and around a river valley in the warm, entirely uninterested in a hot bath. Nothing is wrong; that is simply what monkeys do when the valley is warm. If your only possible window is summer, go in knowing that, or read is it worth it and decide honestly whether the three hours each way is a good use of a summer day in Japan.
September to November
Quieter. The valley colours up in October and the walk is genuinely pleasant. Bathing is not yet reliable, and the park’s hours shorten to 9:00 to 16:00 from November, which shortens the day more than people expect once they have added a three-hour approach and two half-hour walks. Check the timing on how long to spend.
Nobody can promise you monkeys in the water
They are wild and free-ranging. They come to the park because it is fed and they leave when they choose, and on a mild January afternoon they may sit on the rocks instead of in the pool. Anyone who guarantees you a bathing monkey on a particular date is selling you something. The park does publish a live monkey-appearance update on the park’s official site, which is the closest thing to a forecast that exists.
Go early. The monkeys are most settled before the middle of the day, the trail is quieter, and you get the light before the valley walls put the pool in shadow. It also leaves you a spare afternoon if the weather turns.
What the cold actually means for you
