The one thing a private car cannot do
I want this out of the way first, because it is the misunderstanding I correct most often at the trailhead. From the Kanbayashi Onsen bus stop and car park it is 1.6 km of unpaved path to the park, 30 to 35 minutes each way, through forest and uphill overall. No vehicle goes up it. There is no shuttle and no step-free route, and whatever you carry in you carry out. A driver can put you at the trailhead an hour before the buses and can be waiting with the heating on when you come back down, which is worth a great deal in February, but the walk itself is not negotiable. Read the trail description honestly before you book anything.

What works
- Families with small children, where the ability to leave when a child has had enough is worth more than any itinerary
- Parties of four or more, where the arithmetic starts to look different from four separate seats
- Anyone arriving from a ski base with luggage, since the public route generally runs back into Nagano before it runs out to the valley
- Photographers and anyone who wants to be at the pool in the first hour rather than the fourth
Worth knowing
- The walk is unchanged, so a private car does not solve a mobility problem
- You are paying for exclusive use of a vehicle and a driver's day, which is the largest single lever on what these cost
- The monkeys are wild and free-ranging and nobody, at any price, can promise they are in the water on your date
- Winter road conditions still apply to a private car, and so does a 16:00 closing time from November to March
Customisable full days
The other thing a private day changes is the shape of the rest of it. With your own vehicle the park stops being the whole plan and becomes one fixed point in a valley that also contains Shibu Onsen, a historic hot-spring town of wooden ryokan and public baths at the foot of the trail, and Yudanaka Onsen by the Dentetsu terminus. Whether a given operator will build that day around you, and on what terms, belongs on their booking page rather than on mine. What I can tell you is how much of a day the park itself really needs, which is less than most people budget.
If the reason you are considering a private car is the walk rather than the convenience, reconsider the trip instead of the transport. Two of the 3.2 km are the point of failure for most visitors who struggle here, not the road.

Is a private tour worth it for a family?
It is the case I make most readily. Small children set their own schedule, the trail is long for short legs, and being able to turn round without stranding a busload of strangers is the whole product. Children aged 6 to 17 pay ¥400 at the gate either way. Read the honest verdict before you decide.
Can a private tour collect me from a ski resort?
Local collection is the main reason people staying at Myoko, Nozawa, Madarao or Shiga Kogen look at private hire at all, because the public route from those bases generally goes back into Nagano first. Can anyone guarantee the monkeys will be bathing?
